Dungeon siege like third person overhead. You cast magic via keyboard keys like Magicka. Your character learns by doing, eventually memorizing, and can cast it themselves. Heroes can teach followers the skills they know, slowly.
Followers that have their own story, inventory, rpg like growth. Player can take any of the hero or followers into fps like view, Skyrim like for combat that is more appropriate to fps (bow and arrow, magic casting).
After 3 or 4 followers, you start commanding them in an rts like view. Heroes and followers that are near dead get whisked away, lose some xp and have to wait time to heal.
The environment is full voxel, dual contour marching cubes. You can dig, mine, and haul resources around in your inventory.
First town has refinery, assembler. You can then either buy a plot and assemble a home for you and your followers or setup your own town outside of starter town, though NPCs will always be prodding at your defenses, so building your own town after you have more than 8 followers makes more sense.
Eventually, magic powered steam punk makes vehicles, machines, flight, underwater, and eventually, space.
Conflict is a world overrun with greed and self serving "poli-monsters" (engineers by the political party rulers of the last generation).
The society is now post apocalypse where metals and science have begun to merge with magic (energies harnessed from "scary" quantum behaviors).
The human race, though scattered, has returned to many of it's basic roots, farming, hand making clothes and weapons, and living in and off of the wilderness.
The players are responsible for building coven like groups, training them, and keeping them together with emotional and other basic needs management for all the families. They can then build rts like armies from their families of followers, upping the skill development of the followers that they take on adventures.
Skills also develop for people assigned to mine, refine, assemble, and research new equipment. They are the ones that eventually make the magic infused steampunk hear that takes you to space.
The blocks, buildings, vehicles, and ships are all built with a grid block system. A single "block" such as a refinery can actually include multiple functional grid parts, like control buttons, visual feedback "lights", fuel rods, intakes, outputs, internal storage (for queueing ) all designed by the player or by one of their followers (as downloaded from steam workshop evolutions).
